Ruby Peterson Reaches 2000 Set Assists

Comet volleyball faced a nail-biting conference match against the Parkers Prairie Panthers on October 3, 2024. It was a night of highs and lows, with sets swinging back and forth in a dramatic contest that saw the Panthers edge out the Comets by a slim margin.

The night opened with Hillcrest grabbing the first set, 25-23, showing strong offensive pressure and determination. Yet, the Panthers retaliated fiercely, taking the next two sets 25-23 and 25-21. The Comets pushed back in the fourth set, tying the score with a 25-21 victory, setting the stage for a deciding fifth set. Despite a valiant effort, Hillcrest fell just short, losing 13-15, culminating in a frustrating 3-2 match loss.

Statistically, the team showcased a stellar performance, despite not playing to their fullest potential. Ruby Peterson delivered a standout game, achieving 9 kills, 17 digs, and an impressive 40 set assists. The night marked a special achievement for Peterson as she reached her 2,000th set assist for the Comets. It was a milestone moment that came after a career-high 48 set assists just days earlier against Pelican Rapids.

Maddie Miller held her ground defensively with 14 digs and an ace serve, while her teammates, Kaia and Kenzie Miller, added 7 digs, 2 kills, and 1 dig and 10 kills respectively. Emily Adams was a force at the net, racking up 18 kills and 10 digs. Ella Knutson, a consistent power on both offense and defense, contributed 14 kills, 21 digs, and an ace serve. Elsa Retzlaff added to the Comets' solid defensive performance with 23 digs and offensively with 7 kills.

Despite the loss, the Comets demonstrated their ability to battle through tough situations, constantly rallying against the Panthers in close sets. Head Coach Debi Foss acknowledged the tightness of each set, pointing out how both teams repeatedly challenged each other, with comebacks on both sides. However, she also expressed the team's disappointment, noting that too many errors ultimately cost them the match.

While the loss may have stung, the game showcased the Comets' relentless effort, determination, and notable accomplishments—especially Ruby Peterson's record-breaking assists.
