Comet Boys Bounce Back in Important Win Over Avail

The echoes of the tough loss to West Central Area still lingered as the Hillcrest Comets stepped onto the court for a Saturday afternoon thriller against Fridley’s Avail Academy. Determined to rebound from the defeat, the Comets faced a formidable challenge in Avail, known for their potent offensive prowess.

Head Coach Ryan Garvin set the tone for the game, emphasizing the importance of team defense and creating scoring opportunities on the offensive end. Friday's practice focused on rectifying the issues that plagued them against West Central, particularly in transition defense and ball security. The Comets were poised to showcase their resilience and growth as a team.

The game unfolded with the Comets grinding out a hard-fought victory, securing a 65-62 win over Avail Academy. Noah Brumfield and Luke Christensen led the charge, showcasing their skills in a well-rounded offensive and defensive display. Brumfield finished with an impressive stat line of 27 points, five rebounds, and five steals, while Christensen contributed 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

Coach Garvin reflected on the team's performance, acknowledging the strides made since the West Central game. He noted, "We had some decent offensive possessions early that came from our energy on defense." The Comets displayed improved patience and a commitment to executing their offensive sets, capitalizing on their defensive efforts.

Despite the challenges, Avail Academy proved to be a resilient opponent, knocking down shots at crucial times to stay in the game. Coach Garvin recognized the need for continued improvement in defensive toughness, stating, "Our defensive resolve through a full possession is a work in progress. We need to play lockdown defense for 35 seconds, not 25."

Critical contributions from players off the bench further highlighted the Comets' depth and versatility. Lincoln Nash, with four rebounds and two assists, played a crucial role in key defensive series, particularly in the full court. Ethan Swedberg showcased his skill around the basket, providing both scoring and rebounding to bolster the team.

Vincent Nash emerged as a valuable asset off the bench, knocking down crucial shots and contributing seven points in just eight minutes of play. Coach Garvin praised Nash's ability to find open space and attack when opportunities presented themselves.

The hard-fought win was a testament to the Comets' resilience and determination to bounce back. Coach Garvin highlighted the progress, stating, "It was great to see the things that roiled us about ourselves on Thursday against West Central – transition defense and ball security – were better on Saturday against Avail."

As the Comets celebrated their first win of the season, the focus shifted to the next challenge. Hillcrest is off until Tuesday, December 12.
