Comets Earn First Win With Strong Play in Home Opener

 

Hillcrest volleyball clinched their first victory in their home opener, delivering a defeat to Ada-Borup with a final score of 3-1 (25-22, 25-6, 14-25, 25-16). The Comets, guided by Head Coach Debi Foss, showcased a stellar performance that excited fans.

Coach Foss was elated as she reflected on the team's remarkable achievement. "Tonight, we got to celebrate our first win of the season on our home court. The girls performed well and did a fantastic job of fulfilling their roles and executing our game strategy."

The standout performances of several players shone brightly throughout the match. Anna Brumfield led the charge, boasting an impeccable 19/19 serving, 15 serving points, 16 kills, 17 digs, and one block kill. Ruby Peterson showcased leadership and skill with a remarkable 15/15 serving, eight serving points, 46 set assists, three kills, and 16 digs. Emily Adams contributed significantly with 12/13 serving, five serving points, 12 kills, three digs, and two block kills. Ella Knutson was a force to be reckoned with, delivering an impressive 19/20 serving, 13 serving points, 11 kills, and 19 digs. Elsa Retzlaff exhibited prowess with a strong showing of 17/18 serving, ten serving points, five kills, and 23 digs. Kenzie Miller added to the firepower with seven kills, two digs, and five block kills, while Chloe Walkup and Maddie Miller made invaluable contributions with nine digs and six digs, respectively.

Coach Foss emphasized the team's improvements: "We played with more consistency, reduced chaos, and an overall more determined effort to not let the ball hit the floor." She acknowledged that a momentary lapse in the third set resulted in a loss but commended the team for their resilience in regaining momentum in the fourth set. The Comets’ serving game, which had seen marked improvement, was a critical factor in their victory. Coach Foss also singled out the team's tri-captains, Anna, Emily, and Ruby, for their exemplary leadership.

With this thrilling win under their belts, the Comets are now setting their sights on the next challenge. They will hit the road to Hancock on Thursday for their first conference game, eager to build on their newfound momentum and continue their journey toward a successful volleyball season.
