Comets Continue Playoff Run With Unity and GRITT

Comet Volleyball continued its impressive season with a big win in the Section 6 Quarterfinals against the Underwood Rockets, a commanding 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-13, 25-20). From the first whistle, the Comets displayed the teamwork, energy, and resilience that have defined their season and propelled them into a beautiful playoff run.

Hillcrest started strong, executing their game plan with precision and cohesion. Head coach Debi Foss praised her team’s performance, noting how “everyone had a role to play, and it was so fun to watch.” The Comets’ ability to unify quickly on the court was evident from the start, with each player embracing their role and delivering under pressure.

Senior standout Emily Adams led the charge with ten kills, four set assists, eight digs, and two blocks, playing an all-around game that set the tone for the team’s dominance. Ruby Peterson distributed the ball masterfully with 33 set assists while contributing 14 digs and an ace.

Elsa Retzlaff brought commanding firepower, tallying 11 kills and eight digs, while Ella Knutson added ten kills and seven digs. Both players pushed the team forward in key moments. With eight kills and three blocks, Kenzie Miller played a vital role at the net, making life difficult for the Underwood offense. Maddie Miller and Chloe Walkup were flawless in their serving game, going a perfect 12 for 12 and adding a combined 20 digs.

The Comets’ point tally on the scoreboard was part of the celebration that extends into their team culture. “Our G.R.I.T.T. theme continues to be lived out on and off the court,” Coach Foss said, referring to the team's mantra of Gratitude-Relationships-Identity-Team/Toughness-Truth. The girls relentlessly addressed mistakes, communicated effectively after every play, and encouraged each other with every point. The unity and camaraderie are clear not just on the court but in how they cheer and celebrate each other's successes.

The energy in the packed Hillcrest gym was palpable, with fans fueling the Comets' momentum. “Thank you to all of the fans for your support and for packing out the gym!” Coach Foss remarked, a testament to the strong sense of community surrounding this team.

With this quarterfinal victory, Hillcrest’s seniors celebrated their last game on their home court in unforgettable fashion. The Comets now look ahead to the Subsection North Semi-Final, where they will face the Breckenridge Cowgirls at Fergus Falls Kennedy High School next Tuesday.

As the Comets march deeper into the playoffs, their chemistry, discipline, and passion for celebrating one another continue to drive them forward. “It was certainly a memorable game for our seniors to have on their home court for the last time,” Coach Foss noted in closing the game and looking forward to more time with her team.
