Holmquist’s Hat Trick Propels Comets to Opener Win

The Hillcrest Comets Boys Soccer Team kicked off their season with a resounding 5-1 victory over the East Grand Forks (EGF) Green Wave on Thursday afternoon, demonstrating the team's growing unity and confidence in Coach Rod’s system.

Despite an early setback when EGF scored ten minutes into the first half, the Comets quickly regrouped. Their resilience was evident when Zane Holmquist seized an opportunity at midfield, carrying the ball downfield and scoring to equalize the game. This moment of teamwork was a turning point, showcasing the trust being built among the players. Just before halftime, Junior Midfielder Drew Fischer connected with Zane Holmquist, delivering a perfectly timed diagonal pass that split the Green Wave defense, leading to another goal and giving the Comets a 2-1 lead.

The second half was a display of cohesive team effort and execution of the strategies instilled by Head Coach Rod Jensen. Six minutes in, Drew Fischer capitalized on a corner kick from Gabriel Mazon, extending the lead. Moments later, a well-coordinated play between Zane Holmquist and Drew Fischer resulted in a powerful goal from outside the eighteen. Holmquist completed his hat trick, scoring again with assistance from midfielder Haakon Kjaergaard, sealing the victory at 5-1.

The Comets’ defense, led by EJ Choi, Caleb Holm, Aiden Kim, Senior Captain Kian Stender, and Aaron Reinadin, tightened up in the second half, demonstrating their growing trust in each other and the system. Freshman goalie Will Selvig made several crucial saves, building the team's collective confidence and determination.

Coach Rod acknowledged the team's youth and inexperience but emphasized the improvement and unity they exhibited as the game progressed. Freshman Charlie Eggiman and 8th grader David Diniz made significant contributions, showcasing the team's youthful depth.

As the Comets prepare for a challenging stretch of games, including matchups against Shanley, Morris, and Minnewaska, they embark on what Coach Rod Jensen calls one of the most challenging starts to a season that he can remember. It is a great test for a young team that will likely continue to galvanize the unity the team displayed in the first match.
