Comets Outshoot Deacons in 2-1 Loss

The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Boys Soccer Team faced off against the seasoned Fargo Shanley Deacons on Friday at DeLagoon in Fergus Falls, showcasing their resolve and determination against a perennial powerhouse. Despite being a young roster, the Comets stepped up to the challenge, demonstrating impressive skill and tenacity.

Fifteen minutes into the game, a Deacon central midfielder managed to place a shot just out of reach of Comet Keeper Will Selvig, putting Shanley on the board. Eight minutes into the second half, the Deacons capitalized on an attack up the right side, with their outside midfielder landing a looping long shot into the upper left corner of the Comet net. At the 55-minute mark, Zane Holmquist responded for the Comets with a header off an assist from Haakon Kjaergard, narrowing the score and concluding the game's scoring with the Comets down by just one goal.

Despite the final scoreline, Hillcrest outshot the Deacons 10-6, a testament to their offensive pressure and ability to create opportunities. The Comets didn't simply sit back; they pushed forward, lining up shots and moving the ball into striking positions, gaining valuable experience and confidence in the process.

“We had several opportunities to score this afternoon and change the outcome. We continue to recognize areas we can improve going forward. I was very pleased with the hard work and hustle from our midfielders, Lincoln Nash, Drew Fischer, Charlie Eggiman, and Davi Diniz. Unfortunately, Junior Dominic Swelstad broke his collarbone during the contest and will be out for the remainder of the season," commented the coach.

The Comets, now 1-1, will travel on Saturday to face Morris High School in their third match in as many days, looking to build on their growing experience and push for victory.

In JV competition, the Comets showed fighting spirit but ultimately fell 3-5. Scoring highlights included Myles Selvig finding the net off an assist from his brother, Will Selvig, and Myles adding another goal off an assist from Davi Diniz. Will Selvig also contributed a goal with an assist from Isaac Fuchs.
