Comets Shine in Record-Breaking Season, Ruby Peterson Joins 1000-Point Club

The Comets are making history this season, etching names into the record books and proving themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the conference. With the squad playing at an elite level, they added yet, another milestone to their unforgettable year—Senior Ruby Peterson became the latest Comet to score her 1000th career point, an achievement that highlights not just her scoring ability but the relentless work ethic and defensive intensity that define her game.

Peterson’s impact on the Comets has gone beyond the stat sheet. She has been the defensive heartbeat of the team, setting the tone with her energy, leadership, and playmaking ability. Her six steals in the Comets’ recent 56-45 victory over Underwood are a testament to her all-around dominance and commitment to disrupting opponents on both ends of the floor.

With Peterson leading the charge, the Comets have been a powerhouse, even without standout junior Ella Knutson, who has been sidelined with an injury over the past handful of games. Despite Knutson’s absence, the team hasn’t missed a beat, thanks to Peterson's senior leadership and fellow veteran Kate Olstad. Their presence has provided a rock-solid foundation for younger players, allowing them to thrive and step up in key moments.

That stability was displayed in the win over Underwood, where Elsa and Elin Retzlaff continued to be a nightmare for opposing defenses. Elsa was simply unstoppable, draining a record-setting eight three-pointers en route to a 28-point performance while also pulling down nine rebounds. Elin was equally impactful, adding 13 points and securing 10 rebounds, a double-double that further showcased her versatility.

Head Coach Hannah Clark praised the team’s defensive effort in the victory, emphasizing that their press and aggressive style of play were instrumental in disrupting Underwood’s offense. “Our defense really set the tone tonight. We did a great job in our press, and I thought our aggressiveness was able to disrupt Underwood’s offense,” Clark shared.

The Comets found themselves in a tight battle at halftime, tied at 25, but they roared to life in the second half, outscoring the Rockets 31-20. The combination of sharpshooting, tenacious rebounding, and a commitment to defensive intensity proved to be the difference, once again demonstrating why this team is one of the most dangerous in the conference.

Beyond the individual accolades, the way they play together makes this Comet team so special. Every player is confident in different roles in different games. They execute their roles with precision, and that chemistry makes Hillcrest such a difficult matchup. Whether it’s Elsa lighting up the scoreboard, Elin dominating the glass, or Peterson, Olstad, Emme Berge, or any number of Hillcrest’s young arsenal providing the steadying presence that keeps the team grounded, this group continues to flex and adjust and is building strong muscles that will serve them well in the postseason.

Congratulations to Ruby Peterson on her 1000th point and to the entire Comet squad for continuing to raise the bar!
