Comets Continue Playoff Surge

Playoff atmosphere poured from the gym as the Comets faced off against the Breckenridge Cowgirls last week. The Hillcrest Comets showed up with one goal in mind: to continue their playoff march, not as individual players, but as a united force.

The game started with a slow and shaky first set. The Cowgirls of Breckenridge came out strong, and the Comets found themselves trailing 17-25 as they ventured back to their bench to regroup. It was a tough blow, but rather than letting it demoralize them, the Comets came together. They huddled, encouraged one another, and made a pact to fight for every point as a team.

In the second set, the Comets found their rhythm. Kenzie Miller, Ella Knutson, Anna Brumfield, Ruby Peterson, Elsa Retzlaf, and the rest of the team started to click. Cheers erupted from the court, as their passes, sets, and kills were executed with precision and unity supported by their team-led encouragement. They took the second set with a score of 25-20, and the energy on their side of the court was electric.

As they headed into the third set, the Comets had not only found their groove but also their confidence. The Cowgirls were relentless in their attacks, but the Comets' defense held strong. Diving digs, synchronized blocks, and relentless determination characterized their play. The scoreboard read 25-16 in their favor, and the Comets were one set away from securing their playoff victory.

The final set mirrored the second in intensity and unity from the Comets, who claimed the game with a final set score of 25-20.

Coach Debi Foss’ words rang in their ears of players as they celebrated the win, "EYES UP!" - a reminder to keep looking ahead, never losing sight of their hope for a state berth and the blessing of unity in their team.

With this victory, the Comets face the Underwood Rockets in the Section Quarterfinals. It would be the third time these two teams met this season, and the Comets are eager for the challenge. The game would be at Kennedy High School Thursday at 6:00 pm.
