Comet Defense Sets Mark for Season of Growth

The Comets' dominance on both ends of the court was on full display Tuesday night. The scoreboard at Hancock High School told the tale, 70-57, where Hillcrest seized control early and never looked back.

Comet head Coach Ryan Garvin's emphasis on defensive intensity and teamwork became apparent right from tip-off. "I loved our energy out of the gate tonight on the defensive side of the ball," coach Garvin expressed after the game. The Comets set the tone by securing 8 stops in the first 10 possessions, stifling the Owls' offensive efforts. The first half defensive display was spectacular, holding Hancock to a mere 7-of-31 shooting from the field. Coach Garvin noted that the Comets' depth was a key factor: "We got a lot of great minutes from nine guys in the first half," allowing them to maintain a relentless defensive intensity.

The return of Gabe Swedenburg to the lineup added an extra layer to the Comets' defensive prowess. Paired with standout defenders like Sean Berge, Lincoln Nash, Vincent Nash, and Noah Bjorndahl, the Comets effectively limited Owl standout Hudson Versteeg's impact, crowding him and denying any good looks. The collective effort on defense set the stage for the Comets' 46-21 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Comets continued to display solid defensive play, holding the Owls to just 10 points in the first 10 minutes. However, Coach Garvin acknowledged a lapse in intensity in the final stretch, giving up 16 points in the last 4-plus minutes. Despite this, the overall defensive performance left Garvin pleased, emphasizing the team's energy and commitment on that end of the floor.

Individual performances shone bright for the Comets, with Noah Brumfield, Luke Christensen, and Ethan Swedberg all contributing double-digit points. Brumfield's 19 points, including a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc, showcased his offensive prowess. Christensen and Swedberg dominated the boards, each securing a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach Garvin acknowledged the lack of offensive rhythm and rotation but emphasized the bigger picture. "Those things will come," he said. The focus was on building defensive intensity and offensive patience for the long haul, recognizing that these lessons would serve the team well into the crucial months of February and March.

As Hillcrest improved to 2-1, the team's journey continues with a road matchup against Mahnomen/Waubun on Thursday night. The victory against Hancock was not just a triumph on the scoreboard but a testament to the Comets' commitment to a season-long journey of growth and resilience.
