Comets Muscle Win In Night of Challenged Shooting but Stalwart Defense

As the season unfolds, the Hillcrest Comets are finding their footing on the court and as a united team both on and off the hardwood. Their journey this season has been marked by resilience, growth, and unwavering camaraderie, which has translated into success.

In their latest triumph over the Ashby Arrows, Noah Brumfield led the charge with a team-high 18 points and ten rebounds, showcasing his prowess on both ends of the court. Luke Christensen added 17 points and grabbed nine boards, complementing the team's effort. Despite a spirited first half with multiple ties and lead changes, the Comets demonstrated their mettle with a swift start, claiming the first nine points of the game and an early five-point run in the second half to regain control. Once they broke the 20-20 deadlock, they never looked back.

Head Coach Ryan Garvin acknowledged the Arrows' tenacity, stating, "Ashby was scrappy and won most of the loose balls tonight. I don't think we matched their energy in the first half. Credit to Coach Holsten for having his guys ready to go tonight."

Contributions came from all corners of the team, with Sean Berge adding 8 points, five rebounds, and three steals, Ethan Swedberg tallying 7 points, six rebounds, and a pair of assists, and Gabe Swedenburg making a significant impact with five points and three steals.

Despite some missed opportunities and a disjointed game, Coach Garvin lauded the team's second-half intensity and improved team defense. He also highlighted their ability to win even in challenging circumstances.

Hillcrest, with a record of 4-1, looks ahead to hosting Border West on Thursday. The season's narrative is shaped by the standout performances of individuals like Brumfield and Christensen and the team's collective resolve and unity. The leadership shown by the senior boys, exemplified by their role in a crucial text thread following their single loss this season, has been instrumental in fostering a sense of purpose and determination in challenging games. As they continue to navigate the season, the Comets demonstrate their strength lies in leaning on each other and finding success together.
