Hillcrest Retains Century-old Mission in Serving Parents

Parents voiced a need for a school that would cultivate in their children a passionate faith in Jesus Christ in the early 1900s. They sought a place to equip and disciple students to foster a love for Jesus and the world. After opening the Lutheran Brethren Bible School to a high school program, Hillcrest has grown into an educational seedbed serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade, providing a classical Christian education rooted in biblical values.

At the turn of the century E.M. Broen heard the calls from many Christian families yearning for a school that would reinforce the values taught at home and in the church. Aiming to establish an academic institution that would foster an earnest love for Jesus Christ and assist young people in growing in their faith, Broen built on the success in discipline young adults in the Bible school to form a dynamic boarding school option for families worldwide. Broen’s ambition to make a school replete with stringent academic rigor with a marked prioritization of spiritual growth for students is the DNA Hillcrest continues to present over 100 years after the first classes walked the halls.

An essential feature of Hillcrest Academy today is its dedication to discipleship using the classical Christian model of education. This style of education accentuates the synthesis of faith and learning, and it focuses on developing wisdom, virtue, and essential thinking skills. By utilizing this educational strategy, students can constructively and authentically interact with the world utilizing the foundation of their faith in Jesus Christ.

The extensive curriculum that extends from kindergarten through 12th grade and covers various subjects, including mathematics, science, literature, history, and the arts. All courses are taught from a biblical viewpoint, enabling students to discern how their faith interrelates with several educational disciplines. The classical Christian model also spotlights the liberal arts, outfitting students with a comprehensive education that inspires intellectual curiosity, imaginative thinking, and effective communication abilities. Through its commitment to this approach, Hillcrest ensures that its students are not only college-ready but also able to maintain a lifetime of learning and spiritual growth.
