Comets for Life Club Attends State March for Life

Against the backdrop of proposed legislation in Minnesota that would permit abortion to the point of birth, the Comets for Life club gathered in St. Paul to join the March for Life.

The club has met throughout the year, attending a live ultrasound at the Health Resources Center in Fergus Falls, conducting a diaper drive for the local pregnancy care center, and learning about the complex issue of the sanctity of life in modern culture.

Last weekend, the club loaded into two vans to attend an informational session specifically for the Comets for Life club hosted by Minnesota Concerned Citizens for Life (MCCL). At the teaching, students learned about how the sanctity of life is being presented and what opposition to the pro-life cause looks like. They also learned how to actively participate in celebrating the image of God as they participate in opposing challenges culturally to the sanctity of life.

After a night of debriefing from the presentation, the group awoke and joined hundreds of people marching to the State Capitol. Many wore hats that touted the phrase “12,000 too many,” a nod to the reality of the 12,000 abortions that took place in Minnesota last year.

When the group reached the Capitol, they were ushered into the rotunda, where 12,000 models of babies at various gestational ages were placed on large red fabric on the floor. Lawmakers walked by as the Hillcrest students stood at the display praying for mothers, doctors, and lawmakers to receive grace and understand the brevity of the realities the lives being impacted through abortion face. Amid a throng of pro-life supporters, Hillcrest students overheard prayers of repentance, petitions for a change of heart in legislative bodies, and an overall request for encouragement to those facing challenging pregnancies.

A representative from Jordan Rasmussen’s office greeted the students in the rotunda to communicate Jordan’s support and appreciation for the group visiting the Capitol for the cause for life. Rep. Rasmussen was out of town on business but made a point to have someone from his office encourage and thank the students and communicate what Jordan is doing to oppose legislation that involves abortion.

As the team wrapped up their time of prayer and visiting in the rotunda, they meandered through the streets to the cars. Their trip home was filled with hope and excitement of being able to practice the apologetics they received through Hillcrest classes and in the mentorship of Hillcrest’s program. Yet they remain troubled by how some shape the culture to avoid discussions on the sanctity of life. This practice of attending the March for Life is one of the many opportunities Hillcrest students have to practice their faith and actively engage and shape the cultural moment with a passion to know God, follow his teachings, and communicate the truths of Scripture to the broader world.
