Comets Retool in Second Half 37-9 Run to Soar in Big Win

The Comets showcased their scrappy determination Tuesday night in a commanding 72-35 win over the Battle Lake Battlers, improving to 3-0 on the season. Despite a slow start and some early defensive lapses, the Comets roared to life in the second half behind a resolve of grit and team chemistry that are quickly becoming the team's trademarks.

Hillcrest held a 35-26 lead at halftime but struggled to find their defensive rhythm. “We came out flat and were continuously finding ourselves out of position on the defensive end,” noted Head Coach Hannah Clark. “Battle Lake did a good job of capitalizing on our miscues.”

The second half told a completely different story. The Comets tightened their defense with increased intensity, stifling Battle Lake's offense and paving the way for a dominant 37-9 run.

Coach Clark highlighted standout performances, starting with Elin Retzlaff, who notched 20 points, four steals, and four assists. “Elin had a great game. She saw the floor really well and was great at knowing when to attack the basket and when to find her open teammate,” Clark noted.

Elsa Retzlaff turned in another well-rounded performance with 18 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, and four assists, while Aaveah Stender anchored the defense in the post and added 13 points. Ruby Peterson contributed nine points and four steals, and Ella Knutson's seven rebounds and six steals added to the Comets’ defensive dominance.

Next up, the Comets look to extend their win streak Thursday vs. Hancock.
