Comets Soar With Record Service Points In Big Conference Win

The Hillcrest Comets volleyball team is on fire this season, continuing to showcase their dominance in the conference, most recently with a commanding victory over Hancock on Tuesday. With set scores of 25-17, 25-12, and 25-13, the Comets are not just winning; they are growing by mastering the fundamentals that will propel them to new heights.

Volleyball fundamentals—serving, passing, setting, hitting, and blocking—are the building blocks of any successful team. Hillcrest has honed these skills through consistent practice, with each game demonstrating how foundational work is translating into in-game success. Head coach Debi Foss has emphasized the importance of mastering these basics, noting that the team is committed to pushing their skills to deeper levels of understanding.

One of the key fundamentals for any volleyball team is serving, and the Comets have shown remarkable growth in this area. Against Hancock, the team recorded an “unofficial” record for the number of ace serves in a match, highlighting their ability to control the game right from the service line. Serving is a skill that can shift the momentum of the game, and Hillcrest’s ability to consistently serve with accuracy and power has been a significant factor in their success.

Over the summer, the Hillcrest squad focused intently on service work, which is now paying off as a key strength in their matches. The numbers speak for themselves. Ruby Peterson led the way Tuesday night with an impressive 19 service points, including 7 ace serves. Elsa Retzlaff wasn’t far behind, contributing 12 service points and 8 ace serves. Maddie Miller chipped in with 9 service points, showing the team’s deep bench of serving talent. The dominance from the service line disrupts the opponent’s ability to execute their offense and often leads to quick points.

"We served well from the line and set an “unofficial” record for number of ace serves in a match." said Coach Foss.

While their service game is strong, the Comets are striving to grow in other areas as well. The team is focusing on refining their passing and setting to move into a deeper level of play. The goal is not just to win matches but to develop a fluid, cohesive style of volleyball that maximizes each player's potential. Ruby Peterson continued to shine Tuesday, with 25 set assists, while Emily Adams and Kenzie Miller’s combined 18 kills reflect the team’s offensive firepower.

Fundamentals like digging—crucial for defensive stability—are also an area of growth. Elsa Retzlaff contributed 16 digs, while Ella Knutson added 7, demonstrating how the team is increasingly focused on defense and ball control.

As the season progresses, the Comets are looking to expand their growth and deepen their understanding of the game. ”Tonight was a fun game as part of this week’s Homecoming celebration,” Coach Foss continued. “Thursday we have another conference matchup game  against Brandon-Evansville.”

With strong fundamentals, a commitment to growth, and standout performances from key players, the Hillcrest Comets are building momentum with every match. Their summer of hard work is clearly paying off, and as they continue to refine their play, the Comets are poised for even greater success.
