Comets Win Behind Defense and Consistent Pressure
The Comet boys locked down their defense in a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Lakes Lakers on Tuesday, with freshman goalkeeper Will Selvig showcasing confidence and soccer acumen as he held down the Comet goal. Selvig, who faced pressure throughout the game, made key saves, particularly on Detroit Lakes' counterattacks, providing a reliable presence on the Comet defense that opened opportunities for Hillcrest attackers on the offensive side.
The Comets' defense, with EJ Cho, Aiden Kim, Caleb Holm, and Gabriel Mazon, played a critical role in redirecting the Lakers’ offensive efforts, limiting their shots on goal to just six. “Our defense was solid, having to defend on the Laker's large field,” said head coach Rod Jensen. “Freshman Keeper Will Selvig was solid in the goal.”
The match started strong for Hillcrest when Drew Fischer launched a rocket from 38 yards to beat the Laker keeper just six minutes into the game. Although Detroit Lakes quickly responded, tying the game 1-1, the Comets kept up their pressure. Lincoln Nash put the Comets back in the lead, following up a deflected shot from Junior Captain Kian Stender, with a second-half goal from Stender and another from Fischer sealed the victory.
After the game, both teams united in a display of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and faith. Drawing on the training both teams have received from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, they gathered to pray together. Comet Junior Captain Kian Stender led the prayer, a powerful moment that underscored the significance of both physical abilities and spiritual confidence in Christ.
The Comets, now 3-4-0, will host the Fargo South Bruins on Saturday at DeLagoon at 10 a.m.
