Comets Continue to Hone Skills with Disciplined Play, Overwhelm Chargers in Brandon-Evansville

Every game this season, the Comet girls have prioritized disciplined basketball. They refuse to treat any matchup as “just another game,” instead seeing each contest as a valuable opportunity to sharpen their skills, remain aggressive on the court, and cultivate a postseason-ready mindset.

That disciplined approach was on full display last week in Brandon-Evansville, where the Comets jumped out to a commanding lead by halftime, holding the Chargers to just 16 points. Stepping hip-to-hip on defense, the Comets showcased an unwavering commitment to their high-energy press and half-court sets, forcing turnovers and limiting the Chargers’ opportunities. By intermission, the score was Comets 47, Brandon-Evansville 16.

Using the relentless defensive effort to feed their offense, the Comets continued to apply pressure and find open shots in transition. They moved the ball patiently and precisely, looking for the best scoring opportunities rather than settling for contested attempts. This methodical yet aggressive style secured a 72–35 victory when the final buzzer sounded.

Elsa Retzlaff was leading the Comets’ offensive surge, tallying an outstanding 33 points—29 of those coming in the first half—on just 16 shots. She added eight steals, showcasing both her scoring prowess and defensive tenacity. “Elsa had an efficient night. She was aggressive but never forced her shot,” Coach Clark noted.

Retzlaff’s impressive performance was buoyed by her teammates. Ruby Peterson chipped in 11 points, four assists, and four steals, while Elin Retzlaff contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Several other Comets also found ways to score, rebound, and distribute: Stella Moline, six points; Aaveah Stender, five points, five rebounds; Emme Berge, four points; Ella Knutson, three points and five assists, and Kate Olstad, two points, five rebounds.

As the Comets continue pushing toward the playoffs, their commitment to self-discipline and team unity is evident in how they share the ball offensively and lock down on defense. Their “hip-to-hip” mentality on defense is more than a visible takeaway from game situations; it symbolizes their camaraderie and collective effort to strengthen one another.
