Comets Lock In on Defense as Playoff Push Intensifies

The Hillcrest Comets made a bold statement Tuesday night, showcasing a defensive masterclass that frustrated the Ashby Arrows and fueled a dominant 78-33 victory. From the opening tip, Hillcrest’s intensity on defense set the tone, rattling Ashby and holding them scoreless for the first several minutes in an electrifying 24-0 run. The game wasn’t just a win, it was a preview of the tenacity the Comets are bringing into the final stretch of the season.

“Tonight, we came out ready to play,” said head coach Donavan Rogness. “The boys played tremendous defense. I'm proud of their efforts. They played a complete game.”

The Comets’ defensive execution has been a point of emphasis as they fine-tune their play ahead of the postseason. With playoff basketball demanding both defensive grit and offensive execution, Hillcrest is laser-focused on developing a game plan that starts with lockdown defense and translates into high-energy offense. Tuesday’s performance was a clear indication of that commitment.

Players swarmed passing lanes, communicated effectively, and forced turnovers that led to transition opportunities. The Arrows struggled to find open looks, often settling for contested shots that played right into Hillcrest’s hands. The defensive effort was infectious, building confidence and igniting an offense that saw nine different players contribute to the scoring column.

Leading the charge on offense was Preston Berge, who finished with 17 points, while Lincoln Nash added 15, Kian Stender poured in 14, and Sean Berge chipped in 10. Junior Griffin Haus added 9, further showcasing the team’s depth and ability to execute from multiple positions. The Comets also made their presence felt from beyond the arc, hitting 7-of-16 three-pointers, a testament to their ability to stretch the floor when their defense fuels offensive rhythm.

Now sitting at 13-5 on the season, Hillcrest’s focus sharpens as they gear up for a crucial conference battle against the 14-2 Border West Buccaneers on Friday night. The Buccaneers will pose a tough test, but the Comets’ defensive mindset and growing offensive confidence make them a formidable challenge for any opponent.

With their defensive intensity leading the way, Hillcrest is proving that when they lock in, they are a team no one wants to face in March.
