Comet Girls Earn Big Win in Come From Behind Thriller

The Hillcrest Comets girls' basketball team defied the odds and left spectators in awe Tuesday night after winning a thriller over the Rothsay Tigers. The Comets faced a daunting 34-25 deficit, but their resilience and grit prevailed as they emerged victorious with a final score of 48-47.

Head Coach Hannah Clark couldn't hide her admiration for her team's character and growth. She commented, "Our defensive effort in the first half was not there, and Rothsay really took advantage of it. They did a nice job of finding the open player and knocking down shots. But in the locker room, we regrouped, made some critical adjustments, and came out with renewed energy on the defensive end in the second half, holding the Tigers to just 13 points."

What makes this win even more remarkable is the youth of the Hillcrest Comets, playing far beyond their years. The Comets, led by Ella Knutson, who contributed a phenomenal 25 points and 16 rebounds, showcased their potential. With 15 points, eight rebounds, and four steals, Elsa Retzlaff consistently hit critical shots in the second half. The supporting cast was equally impressive, with Kate Olstad's four points and eight rebounds, Emme Berge's two points and 10 rebounds, and Ruby Peterson's two points, three rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

"Ella registered another double-double, leading us tonight on both ends of the floor,” Coach Clark recounted. “I thought Emme Berge had a great defensive game for us and did a nice job going after and securing rebounds. Elsa Retzlaff hit some big shots for us in the second half, finishing with 15 points."

Rothsay, led by Savannah Sullivan with 19 points and four rebounds, McKenzie Tillman with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Bethany Danielson with 10 points and four rebounds, put up a fierce fight. Coach Anita Heier acknowledged, "This was a great conference matchup; both teams played hard tonight. Hillcrest just executed more down the stretch."

The Comets (8-3, 6-1 LEC) have undoubtedly turned heads with their remarkable performance, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the conference. Their journey through this challenging week has revealed their true character and grit, making them a team to watch. As they prepare to host a top tier team in Underwood on Friday night, their youth and tenacity will continue to shine.
